Understanding the AI Regulation Controversy in the US

In recent developments, a Republican proposal aimed at preventing states from regulating artificial intelligence (AI) for a decade has sparked significant opposition. The measure, included in US President Donald Trump’s tax cut bill, seeks to pre-empt the recent AI laws enacted across many states.

A coalition of 40 state attorneys general, representing both Republicans and Democrats from California, Ohio, Tennessee, Arkansas, Utah, Virginia, and others, issued a clear statement urging Congress to reject this moratorium. They argued that such a broad ban would deprive consumers of necessary protections and hinder states’ ability to respond to emerging AI risks.

California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, emphasized that the state has already enacted laws regulating AI, including bans on unethical uses such as generating explicit images without consent and unauthorized deepfakes in politics. He underscored that states must retain the ability to develop and enforce appropriate AI regulations.
