Neighborhood Healthcare, a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in California, has successfully expanded the deployment of ambient AI technology across its network of clinics. This move follows a promising pilot phase where the technology helped ease the increasing administrative burden faced by clinicians.
Ambient AI, which discreetly records conversations during medical visits and automatically generates clinical notes, has shown to be a valuable tool in busy healthcare settings. “It was our hope, and now belief, that the system could streamline our administrative record process while empowering providers to focus more on patient care,” said Prudence August, CIO at Neighborhood Healthcare.
The FQHC, serving nearly 100,000 patients annually, introduced Nabla’s ambient AI assistant to 200 clinicians across clinics in San Diego and Riverside counties. The implementation involved extensive staff training and efforts to gain staff buy-in, especially since many clinicians were accustomed to live medical scribes.
Clinicians reported that the AI tool significantly reduced their documentation time. Reyna Reynaga-Vargas, a nurse practitioner, shared that before the technology, she spent hours completing notes at home. “Now, I can see approximately 16 to 20 patients a day and finish my notes most likely on the same day,” she said.
The AI-generated notes have been largely accurate, with 76% of over 34,000 notes rated highly by providers. The tool supports multiple languages, including Spanish, enabling clinicians to document in the language most comfortable for them and their patients.
The benefits extend beyond administrative ease. Reduced after-hours work and quicker note completion contribute to lower clinician burnout. The technology allows clinicians to document in real time, fostering a more efficient workflow and better patient engagement.
While some initial resistance was observed, staff training and patient education about data safety helped facilitate adoption. The technology’s success implies a promising future for ambient AI in resource-constrained healthcare settings.
“Invest now in making your organization a more effective and efficient care provider,” August advised, highlighting the potential of AI to transform healthcare delivery.
