OpenAI Invests Million in AI Consortium to Drive Future Innovations

OpenAI—known for developing ChatGPT—has committed $50 million to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) technologies through a partnership with 15 prestigious research universities and institutions across the United States, United Kingdom, and France.

The funding is set to inaugurate NextGenAI, a consortium aimed at fostering innovative AI developments in medicine, science, technology, and knowledge sharing. Additionally, the initiative focuses on equipping the next generation of students, educators, and researchers with necessary AI skills. OpenAI plans to provide research grants, computer funding, and access to valuable datasets and APIs to support these goals.

Founding members of NextGenAI include the California Institute of Technology, California State University, Duke University, the University of Georgia, Harvard University, Howard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, University of Mississippi, Ohio State University, University of Oxford, Sciences Po, and Texas A&M University, along with Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Public Library.

‘NextGenAI is designed to support the scientist searching for a cure, the scholar uncovering new insights, and the student mastering AI for the world ahead,’ OpenAI stated in a news release. ‘NextGenAI reinforces the vital partnership between academia and industry, ensuring that AI’s benefits extend to laboratories, libraries, hospitals, and classrooms worldwide.’

Anne Trefethen, pro-vice-chancellor at the University of Oxford, commented, ‘This new collaboration marks an exciting step forward. By working together, we can learn from one another, advancing the frontiers of artificial intelligence, understanding its impact on education, and unlocking its vast potential for the benefit of our university community and beyond.’
