Many healthcare leaders acknowledge the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance patient care. However, caution is urged as a respected patient safety organization raises alarms about the possible dangers associated with AI technologies.

ECRI, a nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of healthcare quality, has placed AI at the forefront of its annual list of significant patient safety threats for the upcoming years, ranking it just behind the dismissal of patient and family concerns.

Voicing Concerns Over AI Implementation

Marcus Schabacker, MD, president and CEO of ECRI, expressed the necessity for more stringent safeguards in the use of AI within healthcare. While he supports the integration of AI into clinical practices, he emphasizes the lack of governance structures to oversee its deployment. He stated, ‘We continue to have concerns because, particularly the larger healthcare providers, they don’t have a good governance structure to oversee the utilization of AI.’

According to Schabacker, the reliance on AI can lead to misuse, particularly when clinical professionals feel pressured to make quick decisions. He remarked, ‘These tools, which are claimed to be decision-supporting, very quickly become decision-making.’

Addressing AI Bias and Transparency

ECRI advocates for increased transparency in AI applications akin to nutritional labels on food products. Schabacker calls for clarity regarding the development, testing, and statistical methods used in AI algorithms. He noted the potential risk in models developed using homogeneous populations, saying, ‘AI models tested on healthy, young white men won’t necessarily be as successful with older Latino men.’

AI’s Growing Role in Healthcare

Despite these concerns, hospitals are increasingly adopting AI technologies to streamline operations. Reports indicate significant usage of AI-driven predictive models, with about two-thirds of American hospitals utilizing them to assess patient risks.

Need for Governance and Oversight

As hospitals grapple with the challenges of AI integration, Schabacker underscores the importance of regulatory oversight from governmental bodies. He remarked, ‘A lot of these AI tools are labeled as decision support, which then requires little or no oversight from the federal government at all.’
