Vatican Raises Alarm Over AI: Ethical Guidelines for a Digital Era
A document released Tuesday by the Vatican outlines ethical guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence, warning that the technology could ‘undermine the foundations of society.’
Pope Francis highlighted the risks associated with AI, particularly in the wake of a new Chinese AI model, DeepSeek, that has disrupted the industry.
As AI technology rapidly expands, Pope Francis emphasized the need for humans to take responsibility for its impact on various sectors.
Potential Risks and Benefits
The Vatican noted that while AI could serve as ‘an aid to human dignity’ by enhancing research and knowledge, it also has considerable risks. The document stated, ‘On a broader scale, by distorting our relationship with others and with reality, AI-generated fake media can gradually undermine the foundations of society.’
Concerns surrounding ‘manipulated content’ have been escalating, particularly with the rise of deepfake videos infiltrating different sectors, including politics. The advanced technology allows the digital alteration of images, audio, and video, leaving lawmakers struggling to address the challenges it presents.
Need for Regulation
The Vatican expressed that mitigating the risks associated with this content can be a ‘grave’ challenge. Pope Francis stated, ‘The issue requires careful regulation’ to curb misinformation, political polarization, and social unrest.
He warned, ‘As deepfakes cause people to question everything and AI-generated false content erodes trust in what they see and hear, polarization and conflict will only grow.’
The document asserted, ‘Such widespread deception is no trivial matter; it strikes at the core of humanity, dismantling the foundational trust on which societies are built.’
A Call for International Cooperation
In 2023, Pope Francis called for an international treaty aimed at ensuring that artificial intelligence is developed and utilized ethically, urging that the risks of technology devoid of essential human values such as compassion and morality could have devastating outcomes.
Earlier in the year, an AI-generated image of him wearing a luxury puffer jacket went viral, highlighting how quickly and realistically deepfake imagery can circulate online.
