Union Community School District Implements AI Gun Detection Technology

LA PORTE CITY – Union Community School District has taken a significant step towards enhancing school safety by partnering with ZeroEyes to implement an AI-based gun detection system. This makes Union the first Iowa school district east of Interstate 35 and one of only a handful in the state to adopt such advanced technology.

ZeroEyes’ software is designed to seamlessly integrate with the district’s existing security cameras, enabling real-time identification of firearms. When a weapon is detected, images are instantaneously forwarded to the ZeroEyes Operations Center, which operates 24/7 and is staffed by military and law enforcement veterans. This rapid communication allows verified threats to be reported to first responders and Union staff within three to five seconds, significantly improving response times and enhancing overall school security.

Superintendent John Howard commented on this critical enhancement: ‘Safety is our number one priority. Our students deserve a secure learning environment, and we are proud to lead the way in using innovative tools to protect them.’

Although Union schools have not experienced incidents of gun violence, the district treats the adoption of ZeroEyes as a proactive measure. Union Board of Education President Ben Schemmel emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, ‘This technology is an important step forward. We can never be too prepared when it comes to school safety. By adopting ZeroEyes, Union is leading the way in implementing innovative security measures to protect students and staff.’
