Microsoft’s 50th Anniversary Event Interrupted by Employee Protests on AI Ethics

Microsoft’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations Are Interrupted by Employee Protests

Microsoft recently marked its 50th anniversary, a significant milestone attended by company luminaries including Bill Gates, Satya Nadella, and Mustafa Suleyman. However, the festivities took an unexpected turn when two employees took the stage to voice their concerns about the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

The event, aimed at celebrating the company’s technological advancements and achievements, experienced heightened tension as Ibtihal Aboussad initiated a protest regarding Microsoft’s role in military applications of AI technology. Aboussad challenged the ethics behind deploying AI in global conflicts, particularly in violence-affected regions. She expressed her disappointment directly towards Suleyman, stating:

‘You are a war profiteer. Stop using AI for genocide. You have blood on your hands.’

As Aboussad was escorted out of the event, she sent a follow-up email to all Microsoft employees reiterating her concerns regarding the company’s AI practices.

Following this incident, Vaniya Agrawal, another employee, also protested during the celebration, calling attention to the executives’ involvement in military AI applications. Despite the protests, Gates, Nadella, and Suleyman continued their dialogue, not addressing the challenges raised.

This turn of events shifted the focus from Microsoft’s technological advancements, such as the introduction of Copilot, to larger ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence.
