Infineon Technologies AG has launched an innovative roadmap for Battery Backup Unit (BBU) solutions aimed at ensuring uninterrupted operations in AI data centers. This initiative is geared towards averting power outages and protecting vital data.
The BBU roadmap features solutions with power capabilities ranging from 4kW to a pioneering 12kW battery backup unit, designed specifically for AI server racks. These solutions are built to provide efficient, reliable, and scalable power conversion, boasting a power density that is up to 400 percent greater than the industry average.
BBUs play a crucial role in AI data centers by delivering a consistent power supply and safeguarding sensitive AI hardware from voltage fluctuations, surges, and other power-related issues.
Adam White, Division President for Power & Sensor Systems at Infineon, emphasized the importance of an uninterrupted power supply, stating, ‘Ensuring an uninterrupted power supply to AI systems is critical for maintaining process continuity. Our energy-efficient battery backup units are designed to keep AI servers running smoothly.’ White also highlighted the company’s expertise in semiconductor materials, aiming to set new standards for powering AI data centers.
Recent findings indicate that downtime in AI data centers could cost businesses between $1 million and $5 million per hour. Infineon’s Partial Power Converter (PPC) technology is being developed as a superior choice for battery backup solutions, addressing quality issues related to power components that contribute to these failures.
The new solutions include a 5.5kW BBU that integrates silicon and gallium nitride technologies for exceptional efficiency and power density. Furthermore, the revolutionary 12kW system combines multiple 4kW power converter cards, showcasing a vast improvement in performance and flexibility.
Infineon’s modular approach also enables scalability and simplified maintenance, ensuring that, in case of a card failure, the system can continue to operate at reduced capacity. This strategy creates significant advantages for customers in terms of performance and reliability.
To further highlight the effectiveness of these BBU technologies, Infineon plans to develop full-system demonstrators, showcasing the advantages of PPC technology in practical applications for future AI data centers.
