Introduction
From the Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies and the Division of Information Technology at Virginia Tech, an initiative has been launched to establish a set of guidelines regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
AI Principles Overview
The university’s AI Working Group has crafted a draft of the Responsible and Ethical AI Principles, aimed at guiding practitioners within the university as they implement AI tools. Intended for community review, these principles provide a common understanding of key AI concepts.
The draft encompasses seven foundational principles:
- Uphold our Mission and Principles of Community
- Foster innovation, discovery, and exploration
- Expand human capabilities and affirm beneficence
- Promote responsible and ethical use
- Prioritize fairness and transparency
- Preserve human judgment and accountability
- Secure and protect data and privacy
It is important to note that these principles are not yet university policy and may evolve as AI technology continues to advance.
Community Engagement
Members of the university community are encouraged to engage with these principles by reviewing the draft presentation, reading the full document, or watching an accompanying video. Feedback is welcomed through a designated form designed to gather thoughts and insights.
Opportunities for Further Learning
For those interested in a more detailed presentation of these principles, a request can be made to initiate dialogue about their implications and applications.
