Greece’s New AI Initiative
The Greek government is taking significant steps towards integrating artificial intelligence into the public sector by assembling a small, elite team of experts. This initiative aims to develop applications that improve state services and enhance interactions with citizens.
Structure and Purpose
This new team, comprised of five to six high-skilled professionals, will operate under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office. Their primary focus will be on creating AI-based solutions tailored to meet public needs, a first for the country.
AI Incubator Inspiration
The project draws inspiration from successful AI initiatives in countries like Sweden, the UK, and Singapore. It will function within the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET), allowing for flexible hiring practices and competitive salaries.
Innovative Tools Under Development
One of the team’s first projects is the development of a natural language processing (NLP) system. This tool aims to demystify complex legal documents, translating them into plain language that is easily accessible to all citizens. Users, from students to business owners, will be able to ask questions about legal texts and receive simplified answers, thereby democratizing access to legal information.
Broader Mission and Commitment
The overarching goal includes prototyping AI solutions that can be scaled across various government services, similar to the UK’s i.AI initiative. This commitment reflects Greece’s desire to modernize governance, reduce bureaucracy, and improve citizen engagement through technology.
Investment in Advanced Research
Additionally, the government is investing in “Daedalus,” a supercomputer aimed at supporting advanced research in AI, among other fields. This move underscores Greece’s resolve to remain competitive in the evolving global landscape of AI technology.
