National Academy Task Force on AI and Disability Benefits Releases First Report

National Academy of Social Insurance Reports on AI and Disability Benefits

Washington DC, April 17, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The National Academy of Social Insurance has launched a significant report via its Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technology & Disability Benefits. This report offers an in-depth examination of the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) current utilization of AI when determining disability benefits.

Created as the SSA expands its use of these technologies, the Task Force’s Phase One report outlines both the responsibilities that accompany using AI and the prospective advantages for the administration of programs related to disability benefits.

Rebecca Vallas, the CEO of the National Academy of Social Insurance, commented: ‘Artificial intelligence and other forms of emerging tech present both significant opportunities and immense risks when it comes to Social Security’s disability programs. This report provides crucial cautions and a valuable blueprint for the agency’s continued use of AI.’

The report arises amid a customer service crisis at the SSA, exacerbated by long-standing funding issues, which has contributed to increasing backlogs in disability claims.

Jack Smalligan, Co-Principal Investigator of the Task Force, emphasized the report’s importance by stating, ‘The Task Force’s principles provide SSA with guidance on how to develop AI in areas with elevated risks for beneficiaries and applicants.’

The Task Force’s objectives include establishing comprehensive principles to ensure AI is applied responsibly within SSA’s operations.

This report marks the initiation of the Task Force’s efforts to address technology’s impact on disability benefits and its role in government processes moving forward.
