Addressing Hearing Loss: Innovations in Hearing Aid Technology

Imagine a life without the joyful sounds of laughter, the rustle of leaves, or a loved one’s voice. For 430 million people, or over five percent of the world’s population with disabling hearing loss, this is a real possibility. This number is forecast to double to one in ten people by 2050, with many newborns affected by congenital hearing issues. Beyond the silence, it can lead to cognitive impairment, falls, and depression.

While preventing hearing loss is ideal, many affected individuals rely on hearing aids for compensation. These devices can be effective, but unfortunately, many suffer from underperformance, leading to issues like noise interference and poor speech recognition.

Recognizing these challenges, Tencent Ethereal Audio Lab (TEALab) aimed to leverage its expertise to enhance hearing aid technology for better communication and daily experiences.

A Mission to Make Hearing Aids Better

Launched four years ago, the Ethereal Audio Campaign aimed to make audio AI technology accessible to developers and NGOs. The focus was on improving the experience of hearing aid users across China, where approximately 28 million people are affected by hearing impairment.

Compared to Europe and the United States, where hearing aid usage rates reach up to 30 percent, a mere five percent of moderately to severely hearing-impaired elderly individuals in China use them due to a stagnant market for domestically produced devices.

Speech Clarity Enhanced by 85 Percent

TEALab developed a hearing aid algorithm that enhances speech clarity and intelligibility by up to 85 percent in complex listening environments. This innovation significantly improves daily communication for users.

The team has also refined products to improve acoustic howling suppression and reduce sound source confusion, ensuring users experience distinct and natural sounds.

To tackle psychological barriers associated with hearing aid use, TEALab introduced user-friendly designs with features like TV mode and easy scene switching for enhanced enjoyment of activities like watching television or making video calls.

Hearing Aid Fittings at Home

Accessing proper fitting services can be challenging due to travel distances, high costs, and a shortage of professional fitting centers, particularly in rural areas. To bridge this gap, Tencent launched the Ethereal Audio Remote Hearing Service Platform, allowing users to access fitting services at home via smartphones or computers.

Understanding Hearing Impaired Speech

Many individuals with hearing impairments struggle to be understood, especially those utilizing sign language. TEALab applied advanced techniques to improve the accuracy of interpreting their speech—an ongoing project that enhances communication inclusivity.

Helping Five Million People With Hearing Impairments

TEALab established a special relief fund aimed at aiding hearing-impaired elderly across China. In the past four years, nearly five million users have benefited from hearing screenings, and over 500 seniors in Shaoguan received targeted relief.

An Open Collaborative Platform

While progress has been achieved, there remains more work ahead. TEALab aims to create a comprehensive loop of hearing health services encompassing early screening, diagnosis, treatment, and fitting by collaborating with manufacturers. This partnership endeavors to meet the growing demand for remote fitting and accessible high-quality hearing aids.

Ultimately, the objective is to ensure that everyone can enjoy the rich world of sound and communication.
