Naval Postgraduate School Enhances Education Through AI Collaboration
ORLANDO, Fla. (NPS) – The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has announced its partnership with NVIDIA to leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and simulation technologies to enhance educational and research applications.
In a ceremony at NVIDIA’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California, NPS President Ann Rondeau and NVIDIA Vice President Ned Finkle signed a new Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). This agreement aims at collaborating on the development of AI-based technologies to improve learning and real-world applications.
Kaitie Penry, Director of Emerging Technology and Innovation at NPS, stated, ‘Working with NVIDIA represents a major step forward in leveraging cutting-edge AI, machine learning, and the NVIDIA Omniverse platform to address complex challenges.’ She added that this collaboration will open doors for groundbreaking research and education, enhancing capabilities for the Department of the Navy.
The collaboration aligns with the 2023 National Defense Science and Technology Strategy, emphasizing Trusted AI and Autonomy as a critical technology area. This initiative is essential for integrating AI and industry technology into advanced education at NPS.
Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro commented, ‘The Department of the Navy continues to champion rapid development of technologies that accelerate decision-making as part of our maritime advantage. I’m excited about the work the Naval Innovation Center at the Naval Postgraduate School will do.’
The recently released Chief of Naval Operations NAVPLAN 2024 outlines goals to enhance situational awareness and decision-making through AI technology. NPS is positioned as a leader in advanced education and applied research, particularly through its Modeling Virtual Environments and Simulation (MOVES) Institute, which will collaborate with NVIDIA.
Under the AI Technology Center Program, NPS and NVIDIA will work together on research projects, with the first focusing on ‘Non-Physics Modeling and Scenario Generation’ aimed at simulation and mission planning specific to naval requirements.
These AI technologies will not only enhance educational effort but will also provide relevant training for operational use, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Jimmie Adkins from NVIDIA emphasized, ‘Training the next generation of leaders in AI is crucial for addressing some of the most complex challenges we face.’
At the CRADA signing, Rondeau remarked, ‘NPS is a catalyst for change to help keep the naval services at the forefront of future operational concepts.’ The partnership with NVIDIA is anticipated to spur education and research advancements that address real-world problems effectively.
As these initiatives unfold, NPS graduates will emerge as not only knowledgeable professionals but innovative change leaders ready to impact the naval landscape positively.
The mission of NPS is to provide advanced graduate education to enhance operational effectiveness in the Navy. For further information, visit NPS online at www.nps.edu.
