Rising AI Influence in Government and Defense: A New Era of Collaboration

GovAI Coalition: Navigating the AI Landscape

SAN JOSE, Calif. — As artificial intelligence rapidly evolves, government leaders are collaborating to responsibly implement this technology. The newly formed GovAI Coalition aims to address the multifaceted implications of AI in governance.

“We have to hold hands as we are crossing this river, because we don’t know what to expect,” said Khaled Tawfik, San Jose’s chief information officer, during the GovAI Coalition Summit on Thursday.

Gathering of Minds: Public and Private Sector Collaboration

The summit in San Jose brought together hundreds of technology professionals from various sectors to discuss the benefits and challenges of implementing AI. From its inception in November 2023 with just 50 individuals on a Zoom call, the coalition has grown to about 1,700 members representing 550 organizations.

Addressing Risks and Building Public Trust

“There are risks that come along with this AI,” noted Dan Clarke, president of AI governance platform Truyo. He emphasized the importance of establishing clear policies to navigate these challenges, especially in Scottsdale, Arizona, which has formed an AI review committee to assess potential risks related to new technologies.

Bianca Lochner, Scottsdale’s CIO, added, “We need to ensure ethical and transparent use of those innovations,” underscoring the need for a solid risk management framework to maintain public trust.

Learning from Past Mistakes

During the discussions, Tawfik remarked, “If any of us get a black eye for implementing the wrong AI, then all of us will have a black eye,” drawing parallels to past challenges faced in the realms of cybersecurity and social media.

He recalled, “If we knew in 2000 what we know today, and we did just 1 percent, we would have been ahead,” reflecting on the rapid development of AI technologies like ChatGPT, which took many by surprise.

Looking Ahead

Tawfik concluded by expressing the coalition’s objective: “How do we learn from our mistakes so that we can be better positioned with AI in 2050?”
