Corewell Health Adopts AI for Enhanced Patient Care
Corewell Health, located in Southfield and Grand Rapids, has introduced Abridge as its enterprise-wide AI platform designed to optimize clinical documentation. This initiative aims to improve patient experiences and elevate clinician satisfaction.
During a recent 90-day pilot program, Corewell Health collaborated closely with Abridge’s teams, yielding significant improvements in workflow and patient interaction.
Abridge’s AI technology transforms clinician-patient conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time, coupled with a Patient Visit Summary that is crafted at an eighth-grade reading level. This approach ensures that patients are well-informed and engaged in their healthcare journey.
The integration of this technology is expected to significantly reduce clerical workloads for clinicians, allowing them to dedicate more time to patient care, which subsequently enhances patient satisfaction.
As a result of this rollout, approximately 4,000 Corewell Health physicians and advanced practice providers will benefit across 21 hospitals and over 300 outpatient and post-acute facilities.
Jason Joseph, Chief Digital and Information Officer at Corewell Health, stated, ‘We are proud to be among the first to implement Abridge’s generative AI technology, ensuring our patients receive optimal care from clinicians focused on what truly matters: connecting with and caring for patients.’ He further emphasized the organizational commitment to innovative solutions aimed at improving workflows and clinician quality of life.
Positive Outcomes from the Pilot
Corewell Health’s 90-day pilot produced key results:
- Increased Patient Focus: 90% of surveyed clinicians reported enhanced undivided attention to patients, with a notable 61% reduction in cognitive load.
- Time Savings: Clinicians noted an average 48% reduction in after-hours documentation time, decreasing from 4.3 hours to 2.2 hours weekly.
- Clinician Satisfaction: 85% of clinicians reported improved job satisfaction, with over half experiencing less burnout due to reduced administrative burdens.
Dr. Kristin Jacob, Medical Director at Corewell Health, expressed her relief: ‘As a practicing physician, I’ve felt the emotional toll of clinical documentation. With Abridge, I can be present with my patients and focus on care, significantly reducing my cognitive load.’
Corewell Health operates as a not-for-profit system featuring over 65,000 employees, including over 12,000 medical professionals. The organization also provides health coverage through Priority Health, serving over 1.3 million members.
