Russia Develops AI Beating BRICS
On December 12, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would foster artificial intelligence development alongside BRICS partners to challenge the United States’ dominance in this vital technology sector.
Speaking at a major AI conference in Moscow, Putin confirmed the establishment of a new AI Alliance Network. This network will integrate national institutions and development organizations focused on AI from BRICS nations and other interested countries.
Putin highlighted, ‘Russia must participate on equal terms in the global race to create strong artificial intelligence. It is precisely the advanced solutions that Russian scientists are currently working on.’ He also invited scientists globally to collaborate.
The announcement reflects Russia’s ongoing struggles due to Western sanctions, which have impeded access to essential technologies, notably microchips crucial for AI development. Sberbank, the leading lender in Russia, has taken a pivotal role in AI innovation, but CEO German Gref noted that acquiring substitution for graphics processing units (GPUs) remains a significant challenge for the country.
On the same day, Sberbank revealed that national AI associations from Brazil, China, India, and South Africa, as well as other nations like Serbia and Indonesia, have joined the AI Alliance Network.
This network aims to facilitate joint technology research, AI regulation discussions, and support the commercialization of AI products in member states.
With the U.S. and China currently dominating the AI landscape, Putin’s coalition with these nations could alter global technological dynamics. The Yakov and Partners consultancy suggested that with its own generative AI models, Russia has the potential to emerge as a more significant player.
The Russian government sees the extensive integration of AI across sectors as a boost to the economy, estimating a contribution of 11.2 trillion roubles (approximately $109 billion) to its GDP by 2030.
Currently, Russia ranks 31st globally regarding AI implementation and innovation on the Tortoise Media Global AI Index, significantly trailing behind the U.S., China, and even other BRICS countries like India and Brazil.
