Workers must sharpen soft skills to thrive in the age of AI - lobby

In today’s rapidly evolving job market, experts emphasize the necessity of enhancing soft skills to remain competitive amidst the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking at the Global Future Councils meeting hosted by the World Economic Forum, specialists underscored how AI is set to disrupt traditional work dynamics.

The report by the forum predicts that by 2027, nearly half of the core skills demanded in most occupations will be altered due to AI’s integration into various sectors. Consequently, the demand for essential soft skills will dramatically increase. Critical thinking, emotional intelligence, creativity, and problem-solving are among the key attributes that employees will need to cultivate.

According to the World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs 2023” report, seven of the top ten in-demand skills between 2023 and 2027 are non-technical. Skills such as creative and analytical thinking, lifelong learning, resilience, and flexibility will be essential as automation begins to overshadow routine tasks.

The Federation of Kenya Employers echoed these sentiments, revealing that a significant skills gap in soft skills has hindered the employability of youth in the country. Poor communication, collaboration, and time management skills are leading factors contributing to this deficit. As highlighted in their “Skills Needs Survey report,” many employers expressed concerns about the workforce’s inadequacies in vital areas necessary for success.

Notably, the survey found that 49.1% of firms identified effective communication as a critical shortcoming among job applicants. Following closely were critical thinking (41.7%), teamwork (25.7%), and time management (23.4%).

Furthermore, the World Economic Forum noted that educational institutions must adapt more swiftly to the changing technological landscape. “The education system is struggling to keep pace with technological advancements. As technology evolves, formal education seems to fall further behind in meeting the demands of the labor market,” stated the forum. Emphasizing the importance of soft skills in navigating the changing work environment, they remarked that workers masterful in communication and cooperation will be invaluable to organizations in years to come.

In summary, as AI continues to reshape the workforce, honing soft skills will play a pivotal role in ensuring job security and adaptability for the future.
