Tech giants OpenAI and Google have called for the Trump-led U.S. government to make a decisive action plan to secure the nation’s lead in the AI industry. Makers of ChatGPT, OpenAI, have communicated their concerns through a letter to the Office of Science and Technology, emphasizing the risks posed by AI advancements in China, particularly with the introduction of new projects like Deepseek AI and Manus AI.
Backing this statement, Google emphasized that the “U.S. lead” in the AI competition is “not assured,” following the recent launch of competitive AI projects in China that have caused significant fluctuations in global stock and cryptocurrency markets.
‘As America’s world-leading AI sector approaches AGI, with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) determined to overtake us by 2030, the Trump Administration’s new AI Action Plan can ensure that American-led AI built on democratic principles continues to prevail over CCP-built autocratic, authoritarian AI,’ OpenAI expressed in their letter.
In a separate communication, Google reiterated this sentiment, saying, ‘While America currently leads the world in AI, and is home to the most capable and widely adopted AI models and tools—our lead is not assured.’
China’s Growing Dominance in AI
China’s recent advancements with the launch of DeepSeek AI and Manus AI signal a strategic push by the Chinese government to foster AI innovation in order to compete robustly with the U.S. In line with their ambitions, China introduced an AI Development Plan in 2017, aiming to secure leadership in AI technology by 2030. Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged industry leaders to leverage AI to navigate challenges such as tariffs imposed by the U.S. and to dominate this significant sector.
U.S. AI Companies Call for Decisive Action
The concerted efforts by OpenAI and Google to advocate for a proactive AI action plan underscore the urgency of maintaining U.S. dominance in the AI landscape, particularly as they approach thresholds like Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The White House recently solicited feedback for a comprehensive AI Action Plan to ensure the United States remains ahead of its global rivals, especially China.
OpenAI and Google have stressed the necessity for a swift response to China’s escalating AI influence. Google remarked that policy decisions will critically determine the outcome of the global AI race, while OpenAI cautioned that America’s standing in the AI field is dwindling.
Both entities have highlighted the importance of regulatory frameworks that promote freedom alongside voluntary collaboration between public and private sectors. Key action points include fostering a robust AI research and development infrastructure and implementing export policies that advocate for the worldwide adoption of American AI systems.
