In an innovative discussion, SAPHI Engineering’s Liam Manning and Wabtec Digital Mine’s Mitch Tanzer outlined the significant impact that artificial intelligence (AI) is imparting on mining industries, particularly in enhancing collision avoidance systems.

Despite extensive research and data collection, precisely determining the global incidence of mine vehicle collisions remains challenging. For instance, SafeWork Australia reported that fatal incidents in the mining sector surged to 11 in 2024, a stark increase from six fatalities in 2023, with vehicle-related accidents being particularly noted.

Understanding Collision Avoidance Dangers

Certain challenges—such as limited visibility, inadequate training, and changing road conditions—complicate collision avoidance efforts. According to Mitch Tanzer, the Global Commercial Director at Wabtec Digital Mine, factors like variable speeds, weather conditions, and the presence of personnel significantly sustain the challenge of preventing collisions.

Current collision avoidance strategies include an array of technologies encompassing sensors, radar systems, and proximity warnings. The adoption of remotely operated and autonomous vehicles is also on the rise, further aiming to enhance safety standards in mining ventures.

Liam Manning, chief commercial officer at SAPHI Engineering, noted, ‘Advancements in collision avoidance over the last 5 to 15 years have certainly improved safety, but the challenge of responding to complex environments persists.’

Implementing AI technology enables systems to analyze context better, providing clarity on whether a detected object poses a legitimate risk. ‘AI-powered imaging systems analyze interactions more complexly and adjust continually, improving risk detection and minimizing false alerts,’ explains Manning.
