AI: The Next User Interface
At the SXSW 2025 conference, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon spoke about the revolutionary potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in reshaping technology interaction. Amon stated, ‘AI is a generation change. It’s going to change a lot how we interact with our computers.’ He emphasized that AI is initiating a major transition, where the interface for technology is evolving beyond traditional methods.
The Evolution of Interaction
Amon reflected on the historical progress in human-computer interaction, noting shifts from keyboards to touchscreens, and now to AI-driven interfaces. ‘Something happened with the AI,’ he said. ‘The computers can understand human language, and because the computer can understand human language, it changes how we interact with computers.’
AI’s Role in Daily Tasks
AI agents will allow users to interact contextually and seamlessly across various tasks without switching between apps. Amon illustrated this with an example of a traveler who takes photos. The AI organizer will categorize images and recommend dining options based on accustomed preferences — all without the user needing to engage with multiple applications. ‘Once the AI understands your intention, they are free,’ he added.
Hyper-Personalization with AI
As Amon explained, voice and text will become universal input methods. AI’s role is not limited to smartphones but extends to vehicles and wearable tech such as augmented reality glasses. ‘When you wear those glasses, what you see the glass sees,’ he stated, showcasing a future where technology responds to real-time user contexts.
AI at the Edge
Amon introduced the concept of ‘AI at the edge,’ where processing occurs directly on devices, enhancing privacy and reducing latency. ‘When you do the processing on the device, it’s immediate. It’s your personal data,’ he elaborated.
Qualcomm’s Pioneering Role
With a 40-year legacy in technology, Qualcomm aims to support all facets of this AI evolution by developing chips that enhance on-device AI experiences. Amon concluded, ‘We’re the No. 1 patent holder in the United States, and our technology is present in the devices people use daily.’
