MESA, Ariz. – Artificial intelligence is making waves in various sectors, and assisted living facilities are no exception. In Arizona, the Fellowship Square facility in Mesa has adopted a unique AI device known as Paul, aimed at preventing falls and ensuring the safety of its residents.
Many residents, including Foster Vance, have expressed the positive impact of this technology. Vance shared his feelings, stating, ‘Our bones are fragile and falling and breaking. Someone is just one step away from not coming back to where you were comfortable living in.’ Since he began using Paul, Vance has not fallen in over a year and emphasized, ‘I do not want to fall.’
How AI Technology Works
Named Paul, the device resembles a smoke detector and is installed in every room at Fellowship Square. Through advanced AI capabilities, Paul monitors unusual resident movements, alerting caregivers to potential issues. Tawnya Williams-Christensen, a staff member at the facility, explained, ‘Anytime that person starts to move, it will vibrate to the caregiver app, telling the caregiver that person is moving.’
The Mark of Success
The implementation of Paul has shown impressive results. Prior to the installation of this technology, the facility reported an average of 20 falls per month. Post-installation, this number dropped significantly, with only six falls reported in August and zero overnight falls for the first time ever. Williams-Christensen shared, ‘We reduced our falls to 12 within the first month, and now we’ve averaged a 70% decrease.’
This significant reduction in falls has far-reaching implications, not only in improving the lives of residents but also in optimizing staff efficiency and resource allocation within the facility. Williams-Christensen noted, ‘If we can reduce the fall, then all those people can do other jobs that day.’
The enthusiastic reception of AI technology like Paul highlights a promising future for assisted living, with innovations focusing on enhancing resident safety and well-being.
