The Increasing Importance of AI in Education
A new report from VitalSource emphasizes that ‘AI isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a must’ for modern learners. The findings are based on a survey of over 1,000 students in the United States, exploring their views on higher education and the role of AI tools.
According to the report, nearly two-thirds (61%) of respondents stated that they have utilized AI tools in their coursework at least once. As the years progress, this number reflects a significant increase:
- 2020: 61.4%
- 2021: 67.1%
- 2022: 66.7%
- 2023: 71.6%
- 2024: 74.4%
Students reported finding AI tools particularly beneficial in:
- Completing coursework faster (64% of respondents).
- Increasing clarity in coursework (58%).
- Improving their grades (47%).
The report also highlighted the demand for AI-powered test prep tools. Among students enrolled since 2023, 48% felt these tools would likely enhance their course experience, marking a notable 19% increase from earlier respondents.
Despite the growing acceptance of AI in education, concerns regarding the cost and value of higher education remain prevalent. A striking 82% of students indicated moderate to extreme concern over education costs, with 51% expressing extreme concern. Furthermore, only 34% rated the overall value of a college degree as ‘high.’
Michael Hale, chief learning officer at VitalSource, stated, ‘The value of a higher education degree is in question among college-aged individuals. However, insights from the report show a clear path forward for institutions to align the higher education experience better with work environments.’ He urged institutions to leverage technology to facilitate student success.
