In a recent memo to employees, Lütke conveyed a distinct vision: the organization will not onboard new staff if AI tools can execute the required roles efficiently.

‘It’s the most rapid shift to how work is done that I’ve seen in my career,’ Lütke stated in his memo, illustrating his enthusiasm for this transformative opportunity. He elaborated on AI’s potential to dramatically amplify efficiency, emphasizing, ‘For the first time, AI tools are shaping our workplace to become tenfold more effective, enabling teams to accomplish daunting tasks with seemingly limitless capability.’

Lütke noted that this evolving work environment is something sought after by top performers—a workplace where collective learning thrives, and meaningful challenges are tackled in unison. He declared, ‘Our mission now is to determine what entrepreneurship looks like in a context where AI is a standard tool, available to everyone.’

Looking forward, Shopify intends to weave AI applications into employee evaluations and peer reviews. ‘Staff will be assessed on their independent contributions as well as how they utilize AI in their tasks,’ Lütke disclosed, highlighting a shift to a performance model that embraces technological integration over traditional hiring practices.

The expectation is clear: teams must first showcase their ability to utilize AI efficiently before engaging in discussions to increase headcount or secure additional resources.
