Financial investment concept; Amazon increases funding in AI startup Anthropic.

Amazon has made another significant move in the technology sector by investing an additional $4 billion into Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup. This latest investment brings Amazon’s total commitment to Anthropic to $8 billion, cementing its role as a minority stakeholder in the company.

The announcement coincides with an expansion of Anthropic’s partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), affirming AWS as the primary cloud provider and training partner for Anthropic’s AI models. Anthropic stated, ‘By combining Anthropic’s expertise in frontier AI systems with AWS’s world-class infrastructure, we’re building a secure, enterprise-ready platform that gives organizations of all sizes access to the forefront of AI technology.’

Founded by former OpenAI executives in 2021, Anthropic has launched its AI assistant, Claude. The company has received backing from other major players, such as Google, which purchased a 10% stake in Anthropic for $2 billion in 2023, and South Korea’s SK Telecom, which invested $100 million to bolster AI deployments in telecoms.

In a recent favorable regulatory development, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) deemed that Google’s investment in Anthropic did not warrant a full investigation under merger rules, mirroring its previous clearance of Amazon’s initial investment.
