Board Directors Take Charge: Embracing AI Governance in Business
In an era where AI (artificial intelligence) influences nearly all aspects of business, board directors are beginning to recognize their critical role in navigating this transformative technology. Surprisingly, while 95% of directors anticipate that AI will significantly influence their businesses by 2025, a mere 5% of companies have established any governance frameworks for AI.
The Growing Importance of AI and GenAI
AI refers to automating tasks through computer systems that learn and make decisions. However, the focus is increasingly shifting to generative artificial intelligence, or GenAI. This technology uses algorithms to analyze data and produce new outputs, creating opportunities for significant productivity boosts across industries.
As highlighted in a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), two-thirds of investors expect GenAI to significantly enhance productivity, which aligns with the staggering growth the sector has seen, currently being funded through venture capital, which comprises over 70% of total investments.
Alpha’s Initiative to Empower Board Members
In response to the knowledge gap regarding AI governance, Alpha has emerged as a vital resource for board directors. The organization is designed to provide directors with educational platforms, enabling them to engage with peers and enhance their understanding of AI.
As Steven Wolfe Pereira, Alpha’s Founder and CEO, states, ‘Creating a space where board directors can learn and grow with AI is essential for them to lead confidently in the AI era.’
The Call to Action for Board Members
As the recent Alpha Board Forum in New York demonstrated, over 100 board directors gathered to stress the necessity of understanding and leveraging AI technology. Alvin Bowles, Alpha co-founder, reiterated, ‘Not knowing how to use AI presents real risks and opportunities for businesses and shareholders.’
The future is clear: board directors must embrace AI governance to lead effectively and innovate within their organizations.
