Harnessing the power of GenAI
Artificial intelligence (AI) is already changing the world, and California will play a pivotal role in shaping that future. The state is home to 32 of the world’s 50 leading AI companies, significant research and educational institutions, and accounts for a quarter of patents and conference papers in the domain.
California has initiated strategies to leverage this emerging technology while also instituting responsible policy frameworks designed to protect Californians, businesses, and workers. In 2023, Governor Newsom inked an executive order outlining California’s balanced approach to generative AI (GenAI) procurement. This order is shaping a future of ethical deployment and transparency, solidifying California’s status as the leader in GenAI worldwide.
Looking ahead to 2024, Governor Newsom announced efforts aimed at utilizing GenAI technologies for tackling various challenges, including reducing traffic congestion and addressing homelessness.
California’s AI Global Leadership
In May 2024, Governor Newsom co-hosted a GenAI summit with leaders from academia, industry, civil society, and government to explore effective utilization of this transformative technology. Partnering with NVIDIA, the state initiated a first-of-its-kind AI collaboration. In September, Governor Newsom convened leading experts on GenAI to develop practical guardrails for deploying the technology safely, emphasizing a science-based analysis of emerging models and their associated risks.
Last year, the governor also signed a series of bills aimed to combat deepfakes and establish necessary regulations. These initiatives focused on protecting performers’ digital likenesses and preventing manipulated election content.
