Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has surged in popularity and capability but raises serious questions about its energy use. Recent studies reveal that using AI systems like ChatGPT consumes up to ten times more electricity than traditional searches on Google.
Understanding AI’s Energy Footprint
Researchers are increasingly alert to the carbon footprint associated with digital technologies. The digital sector is now responsible for a carbon output comparable to the aerospace industry, representing two to four percent of global emissions.
The energy consumption of the roughly 11,000 data centers globally is enormous, rivaling the entire power usage of countries like France in 2022. As we adopt generative AI, the effects on global energy consumption remain uncertain. Manuel Cubero-Castan, leading initiatives at EPFL’s Sustainable IT project, emphasizes the importance of understanding the total lifecycle energy costs of these AI systems.
