Celestial AI and Rockley Photonics logos

Celestial AI has announced the acquisition of silicon photonics intellectual property from Rockley Photonics, encompassing worldwide issued and pending patents. This strategic move aims to augment Celestial AI’s intellectual property portfolio to over 200 patents globally, particularly in the rapidly advancing field of silicon photonics for optical compute interconnect.

The patent portfolio acquired features three primary technology categories: optoelectronic systems-in-package, electro-absorption modulators (EAMs), and optical switch technology. These innovations are significant for a variety of AI data center infrastructure applications.

Rockley Photonics is recognized as a forerunner in the silicon photonics space, with foundational intellectual property tracing back to 2014, well before many of its competitors emerged. The newly acquired IP dovetails perfectly with Celestial AI’s core technology roadmap and is set to enhance the company’s Photonic Fabric technology platform, promoting the deployment and commercialization of cutting-edge solutions.

Dave Lazovsky, Founder and CEO of Celestial AI, expressed confidence in the acquisition, stating, ‘The addition of Rockley’s IP into our technology platform further accelerates the growth of Celestial AI’s highly valuable intellectual property portfolio and amplifies the strength of our position. These patents align nicely with our ongoing development of Photonic Fabric, which is crucial for advancing optical compute interconnect solutions.’

This acquisition showcases Celestial AI’s commitment to enhancing Photonic Fabric-based solutions for AI data centers, highlighting a significant step in strengthening its technological capabilities and competitive edge in the market.
