Innovative Collaboration at the CHAI Showcase

CHAI Showcase: A Groundbreaking Collaboration of Music and AI at the University of Miami

The upcoming CHAI Showcase at the University of Miami promises a unique musical experience where traditional music meets artificial intelligence. Scheduled for April 12 at the Clarke Recital Hall, this concert will feature a live ensemble composed mainly of Frost School of Music students and faculty, alongside talented alumni artists.

What Makes CHAI Unique?

Unlike typical concerts, the key players behind the scenes are invisible—artificial intelligence. Known as “Concerts With Humans and Artificial Intelligence“, CHAI showcases material entirely co-created with AI technologies. As Tom Collins, associate professor in the music engineering department, points out, “This will be the first organic pop concert where everything was co-created with AI.” Elements of the concert might feature familiar genres but will also explore innovative sounds through AI collaboration.

The Artistic Vision

Leading the artistic direction for the concert is Raina Murnak, also an assistant professor at the Frost School, who emphasizes that the showcase goes beyond just music; it incorporates visual elements, such as AI-generated videos and stage props. “It will be live music, not just pressing ‘play’,” Murnak explained. “The whole show is intended to look, feel, and be cutting-edge.” The artwork and performance aim to engage audiences while addressing the humorous side of AI anxiety.

Funding and Vision

This concert is made possible through a generous $100,000 grant from the University’s Lab for Integrative Knowledge (U-LINK) and aims to demystify AI within the artistic community. Murnak, Collins, and fellow faculty member Christopher Bennett are dedicated to refining AI-generated music so it resonates more with human creativity, encouraging musicians to embrace AI instead of fearing it.

Engaging the Audience

According to Collins, there are significant shifts in how technology impacts the music landscape. “The pace of change is surprising, and while exciting, it can also be unnerving,” he stated. To ease these concerns, they invite artists to engage with AI to understand its potential and limitations.

Meet the Team

Among those actively participating is graduate student Amanda Pasler, who integrates AI into her rock band, Ex Monarch. She emphasizes the importance of using AI as a tool, not a replacement for human creativity, stating, “It’s a useful tool, but just a tool and not a replacement.” Similar sentiments echo among the entire team involved in the CHAI Showcase, including their recent success in the International AI Song Contest.
