AI Education in China

BEIJING — In a significant push towards modernizing education, China is stepping up efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the curriculum for its youth. The Ministry of Education has outlined new strategies aimed at equipping primary and secondary school students with vital skills for the future.
The ministry’s recent circular emphasizes the importance of cultivating creativity, scientific interests, and digital skills among students. Schools across the nation are encouraged to develop dedicated AI programs, incorporating relevant topics into daily teaching.
Curriculum Developments
Under these new initiatives, primary school students will gain hands-on experience with AI technologies from an early age. As students progress through their education, the focus will shift towards applying these technologies in real-world scenarios, culminating in project work in senior high school.
National Smart Education Platform
An additional resource will be created as an AI section on the national smart education platform, aimed at improving the accessibility of quality educational materials.
Support from Higher Education and Industry
Colleges, universities, and tech companies are encouraged to open their AI labs to younger students, fostering a collaborative environment for learning.
Huai Jinpeng, the Minister of Education, described the potential of AI as a ‘gold key’ to enhancing the educational landscape, recognizing both the opportunities and challenges it presents.
In an effort to pioneer this initiative, 184 schools have been selected as pilot bases to test AI education philosophies, models, and programs. These pilot schools will help create exemplary case studies to be replicated nationwide.
