China has ushered in the New Year with a focus on its technological advances, highlighted during its first science and technology-themed gala. The event aimed to rally public support for China’s innovation aspirations amid persistent tensions in the tech sector with the United States.
The New Year gala, broadcasted by CCTV, deviated from typical entertainment formats featuring musical performances, opting instead to inform the audience about breakthroughs in fields ranging from artificial intelligence to quantum technology.
Following the gala, President Xi Jinping delivered his traditional New Year address, where he acknowledged significant advancements in science and technology, particularly the production of 10 million new energy vehicles and notable achievements in AI, integrated circuits, and lunar exploration.
As the 2025 horizon approaches, Xi emphasized that China will prioritize “high-quality development” and aims to enhance self-reliance in science and technology amidst ongoing global uncertainties.
The impending challenges are largely anticipated from the United States, especially with the return of Donald Trump as President. Analysts predict that the US will continue to impose limits on China’s access to high-tech products, following previous restrictions on advanced chips and manufacturing equipment.
During the gala, innovative projects were showcased, including enhanced electric vehicle functionalities, generative AI applications, humanoid robots, drones, and brain-computer interfaces developed by Chinese firms, alongside achievements in national explorations such as those conducted by the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope, which reportedly identified over 1,000 pulsars.
