A recent survey conducted by Elon University’s Imagining the Digital Future Center highlights crucial predictions regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for human traits and capabilities by the year 2035. The report reveals a significant concern among global technology experts about the negative effects of AI on essential human attributes.
Most survey respondents, comprising over 300 technology experts, anticipate “deep and meaningful” changes in human capacities as AI becomes integrated into everyday life. A significant majority expressed worries that AI adoption could diminish social and emotional intelligence, reduce empathy, and erode confidence in personal abilities.
In detail, the nine areas where experts foresee predominantly negative changes include:
- Social and emotional intelligence
- Capacity and willingness to think deeply
- Trust in shared norms and values
- Confidence in native abilities
- Empathy and moral judgment
- Mental well-being
- Sense of agency
- Sense of identity
- Metacognition
Conversely, experts are optimistic about potential positive changes in curiosity, decision-making, and creativity, pointing to a likely enhancement in these areas through AI engagement.
Overall, 61% believe the impending change will be either “fundamental and revolutionary” or will carry a moderate sense of change. When asked about the essence of being human, half anticipate changes will bring both positive and negative impacts, while a smaller fraction predicts a predominantly negative or positive outcome.
As part of this study, numerous experts contributed essays discussing implications for the future of humanity amidst AI advancements. Many highlighted concerns regarding human capabilities, while some proffered hope that adaptive human qualities could prevail.
Lee Rainie, a director at the Imagining the Digital Future Center, reflected on the study’s findings, asserting that it is vital to proactively consider the evolving relationship between AI and human qualities. He stated, ‘They anticipate that AI systems will keep encroaching on some fundamental human intelligences and worry this will be demoralizing for us.’
As AI technology progresses, the report calls for a collective effort to address the challenges posed by these changes—emphasizing education, adaptability, and an intentional approach towards AI integration.
