Empowering Seniors: Navigating the Future with AI
The founder of Mill Valley nonprofit AI and You has developed a program to help older adults navigate the use of artificial intelligence and technology that is becoming increasingly common in modern life.
Founded in 2019, AI and You launched a free educational program called AI and Seniors in February, which seeks to help seniors understand how artificial intelligence integrates into their everyday lives. In this digital age, knowledge of technology is essential.
The program features a two-part video series designed to unravel the complexities of AI and its practical applications. Part one discusses AI’s integration into daily routines, emphasizing its life-saving capabilities. For example, AI-powered devices can alert caregivers if an older person falls or has an accident at home.
Meanwhile, part two focuses on computer safety, offering guidance on how seniors can avoid online scams, which are increasingly sophisticated and often target vulnerable populations. The video cautions viewers that technology can mimic a loved one’s voice requesting assistance, which could be a trap.
Founder Susan Gonzales, a professional with 15 years of experience in technology, stated, ‘AI is different from any other technology anybody has experienced. What’s important for seniors to understand is now’s not the time to be burying their heads; they need to embrace AI.’
Gonzales highlighted the healthcare sector as a significant beneficiary of AI, particularly in improving efficiency and identifying cardiac distress. She continued, ‘It can access a massive amount of data in a heartbeat, when it couldn’t have done so in the past.’
In addition to the program for seniors, AI and You also offers resources for small businesses, helping them utilize AI while considering the impact of reduced human interaction.
Since its inception, the nonprofit has welcomed over 2,000 users. While it relies on support from foundations and donations, it declined to disclose its operating budget or specific contributors.
Susan Wood covers various topics including agriculture, law, cannabis, and finance. For inquiries, she can be reached at 530-545-8662 or [email protected].
