Evanston seniors learning about artificial intelligence

The Growing Importance of AI in Everyday Life

Artificial intelligence continues to shape our world, enhancing the way we live and work. On April 10, at the Levy Senior Center in Evanston, seniors gathered to discuss the interface of AI with their daily lives, thanks to a seminar organized by Northwestern University’s Science Policy Outreach Taskforce.

Understanding AI: A New Approach

Meagan Olsen, a doctoral candidate in chemical and biological engineering at Northwestern, emphasized the necessity of making technologies like AI accessible to all, particularly senior citizens who might feel left behind in the digital age. ‘Artificial intelligence is something that has been in the news a lot and is rapidly reshaping how we interact with technology,’ Olsen remarked, aiming to simplify the topic.

Engagement Through Interaction

The seminar was interactive, encouraging seniors to share their experiences with AI tools. As Meagan asked for a show of hands, nearly half the attendees indicated that they had utilized AI in some form, whether consciously or through platforms like Google.

Demystifying Technology

During the presentation, Olsen elaborated on the capabilities of AI, contrasting traditional computing with machine learning through relatable analogies. ‘We want to help demystify this technology and provide necessary background information so that community members can engage in conversation about AI,’ she explained.

Ethical Implications and Real-World Applications

The discussion also touched on ethical considerations surrounding AI, including its implications for job markets and the risks of misinformation. ‘AI is neither good nor bad; it is simply a tool,’ Olsen concluded, reminding participants to remain critical of how they utilize such technology.

Looking Ahead

The initiative, termed ‘Science with Seniors’, aims not only to educate but also to empower older adults, providing them with the knowledge to make informed decisions regarding technology that affects them. Matuszewski, the task force’s public engagement coordinator, noted the importance of these conversations: ‘We hope to provide easy-to-understand updates on new technologies and their impacts.’ The event was a significant step toward bridging knowledge gaps and fostering dialogue between generations.
