Are We Asking the Right Questions in AI?
Are we sprinting without knowing where the finishing line is? As the latest AI models dominate headlines, many are wondering: are we asking the questions that truly matter or just chasing what feels urgent? This topic was explored during the recent INSEAD Americas Conference. Moderator and participants discussed the pressing questions in the realm of generative AI.
Identifying Blind Spots in AI Discussions
During the conference, it became clear that leaders are concerned about the under-asked questions surrounding AI’s impact on the workforce and organizational structures. Francisco Veloso, INSEAD’s Dean, highlighted the importance of adapting to these technological changes by redefining what work looks like in an AI-centric world. He noted that the transformation of routine cognitive tasks parallels the Industrial Revolution. ”We’re going to be replacing routine cognitive tasks with intelligent systems,” he shared.
Lily Fang, Dean of Research and Innovation, emphasized asking ‘why’ before discussing the ‘how’ and ‘what’ of AI implementation. She stated, “Organizations need clarity about what they’re trying to achieve with AI.”
Key Questions from Industry Leaders
Robert Maciejko, co-founder of the INSEAD AI community, stressed the importance of leveraging those within organizations who are already utilizing AI effectively. “Empower your top performers to find what works and scale those solutions,” he advised.
Mary Falvey, President of Falvey Associates, cautioned that the rapid pace of technological progress might soon outstrip our regulatory capabilities. “Focus on the principles that guide AI rather than getting caught up in regulatory battles,” she urged.
As the audience raised questions, many expressed concerns about the practical implications of AI. Amir Hosseini, Managing Director at Alix Partners, pointed out gaps in data management that inhibit smoother AI implementation. “Companies often lack the data readiness necessary for effective AI deployment,” he observed.
Overemphasized Questions in AI
Turning to the questions that dominate discussions in AI, it was clear that many leaders fixate on trends driven by fear and urgency, such as job replacement. Fang noted, “The hype creates busy action without clear direction.”
As the conversation unfolded, it became evident that while technology continues to evolve, leaders should instead focus on how best to incorporate existing tools into their organizations rather than chasing every new innovation. “We need to adapt our organizations to handle what’s already here,” Veloso highlighted.
Conclusions from the Conference
The INSEAD Americas Conference provided a platform for leaders to introspect on AI’s potential and its impact on the future of work. Morten Hansen, a professor from the University of California, Berkeley, raised concerns about the role of business schools in this AI transformation. However, Fang asserted that rather than diminishing their relevance, this shift underscores business schools’ essential role in navigating the changes ahead. As the discussion wrapped up, it was clear that the questions we choose to prioritize will shape the future landscape of not only businesses but society at large. At INSEAD, we strive to guide leaders in asking the important questions during this transformative era.
