AI’s Transformative Role in Global Affairs

An image depicting a conference on artificial intelligence and global security

This month, PRIO, the Peace Research Institute Oslo, hosted its second annual AI Days event, drawing attention to the significant impact that artificial intelligence (AI) is having on global peace and security. With a series of seven events spanning two days, experts and policymakers gathered to explore the various dimensions of AI’s influence on conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and security dynamics.

‘AI is revolutionizing everything from diplomacy to warfare, and we need to understand the opportunities and risks it presents to global peace,’ stated PRIO Director Henrik Urdal. The event served as a collaborative platform aimed at discussing these complexities in an increasingly digital era.

The urgency of this conversation cannot be overstated as AI rapidly evolves and permeates multiple sectors, including international relations and humanitarian efforts. Recent advancements in machine learning and autonomous systems are reshaping our approach to data analysis, military automation, and much more. However, many in the peacebuilding community are concerned about the dual-use nature of AI technologies that can be leveraged for both beneficial and harmful purposes.

The AI Days symposium covered various topics, including the ethical considerations of AI in humanitarian contexts and the ways authoritarian regimes may exploit AI to solidify power. These discussions highlight PRIO’s commitment to understanding and guiding the responsible implementation of advanced technologies.

‘All seven events can be watched on our YouTube channel,’ encouraging a wider audience to engage with the critical discussions undertaken at the conference.

Wearable Technology Revolutionized by STMicroelectronics

In the realm of healthcare technology, STMicroelectronics has introduced a groundbreaking biosensing chip designed for next-generation wearable health devices. The ST1VAFE3BX chip integrates precise biopotential input with inertial sensing and AI capabilities, promising enhanced performance while minimizing power consumption.

Simone Ferri, APMS Group VP at STMicroelectronics, emphasized the importance of wearable technology in advancing health awareness: ‘Wearable electronics is the critical enabling technology for the upsurge in individual health awareness and fitness. Today, everyone can have heart-rate monitoring, activity tracking, and geographical location on their wrist.’

The new biosensor paves the way for further applications beyond traditional wearables, potentially offering intelligent patches for health monitoring. Collaborating with industry leaders like BM Innovations and Pison, STMicroelectronics aims to reshape the experience of health monitoring with their innovative technology.

AI and Automation Transforming Healthcare
