Ravi Patel, PharmD, MBA, MS, lead innovation advisor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh, shared insights on the challenges presented by artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare during a recent conference.
The Ethical Landscape of AI in Pharmacy
Patel approached the complex landscape of AI integration, particularly emphasizing the critical role that pharmacists play in addressing the ethical and practical challenges inherent to such technological advancements. He noted that while AI provides innovative solutions, it also raises significant ethical questions that call for diligent human oversight.
Central to his discussion was the need for balance between embracing technological advancements and maintaining a human-centered approach. Key challenges highlighted included issues of data ownership, trust, and biases that might arise during AI implementation.
Addressing Bias and Data Ownership
One of Patel’s main concerns revolved around the ownership of medical data, especially as it relates to patient consent and research datasets. He strongly believes that pharmacists are uniquely positioned to advocate for patient rights by actively questioning how their data is handled and utilized within AI frameworks.
“We have an opportunity to make a new technology more than just a novelty or a scary idea and make it a true collaborative approach between the humans and the technology that can improve their work,” Patel stated.
Opportunities for Collaboration and Improvement
Furthermore, he discussed the potential risks of AI technology, including the exacerbation of existing disparities and digital divides. By utilizing data from limited populations, AI could inadvertently amplify biases and inequalities. However, Patel sees this as a chance for continuous evolution, suggesting that each technological iteration should work toward rectifying previous shortcomings.
Pharmacists, alongside other healthcare professionals, are encouraged to take an active role in the development of AI resources, helping ensure these tools effectively address human issues while upholding ethical standards.
As Patel concluded, the path forward involves leveraging human expertise in concert with advanced technology, establishing a thoughtful integration that prioritizes core competencies while remaining adaptable to change.
