Can AI and People Share Intimacy?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a staple in our daily lives, raising a profound question posed by Robyn Landau, director of Kinda Studios: How can we use these technologies to facilitate a greater emotional connection among individuals?
At the recent SXSW panel titled Emotional Machines: AI, Feeling & the Human Body, participants were treated to a video by Barney Steel’s experimental studio, Marshmallow Laser Feast. The video emphasized the hidden intricacies of nature, particularly trees, utilizing AI to provide viewers with a sensory experience geared towards education and meditation.
Steel remarked, ‘We’ve been doing a whole series on breath relationships, trees, and the more that you sort of follow that journey of breath, you realize that, on such a deep cellular level, we’re woven into these relationships that aren’t available to our eyeballs.’ He emphasized that through virtual reality and sensory experiences, deeper understanding can arise from our connections to nature.
Another speaker, Danielle Krettek Cobb, chief creative adviser at Hume AI, is dedicated to the intersection of technology and nature, crafting empathetic AI systems such as AI voices that grasp human cadence and tone to enhance well-being. She stated, ‘I think the thing that guides my work … is we often think of science and spirituality and design and technology as a big Venn diagram. For me, it’s a circle. It’s all the same thing. It’s different love languages.’
Suhair Khan, founder of open-ended design, commented on the evolving intimacy between humanity and AI. She highlighted how individuals’ experiences shape the technology being developed. Khan noted, ‘There’s a sense of us needing to be aware of what’s happening to us, but also to bring that to what we build.’
