From Skeptic to Advocate: Embracing the Power of AI
In a recent personal reflection, columnist Justice B. Hill shared a compelling narrative of his transformation from skepticism to advocacy regarding artificial intelligence (AI). Nine weeks ago, Hill openly admitted his unfamiliarity with the technology, acknowledging he ‘had no clue what this technology could do.’ This acknowledgment came after attending the Miami Book Fair, where he was inspired by notable journalist Kara Swisher, who emphasized the importance of investing in technology.
Hill described a misconception he held prior to his awakening; he thought he had ‘no reason to use it.’ However, his experience with AI revealed its capabilities, which include streamlining tasks such as drafting legal documents and planning travel itineraries. He humorously noted, ‘AI is more versatile than a Swiss Army knife.’ Thus began his mission to promote AI to others, particularly highlighting discussions with friends and family.
During a trip to Las Vegas, he introduced the concept of AI to his friend, a basketball coach, and his young son Cam, sparking a conversation about AI’s role in education. Hill noted that Cam viewed AI as a ‘tool’ and recognized its assistance in completing assignments. This contrasted with his friend’s skepticism, which led Hill to compare AI to calculators— tools that transformed mathematical education.
As Hill continued to embrace the technology, he found himself promoting its benefits, stating, ‘Use for what it is.’ He believes AI is a revolutionary tool that offers both economic and intellectual advantages, making it essential for society to adapt. He warned against delaying this technological embrace, especially for Black youth, who ‘can’t afford to miss this ride.’
Hill concluded with a hopeful perspective on AI’s future, insisting a collaborative journey with the technology is crucial for ongoing development and progress.
