Google has taken a significant step forward in its ongoing effort to revolutionize internet search and technology with the launch of a new artificial intelligence (AI) mode and upcoming AI-powered devices. During its annual developers conference, Google announced the release of an ‘AI mode’ available in the United States, which makes interacting with its search engine resemble a conversational exchange with a knowledgeable expert.

This innovative feature, available to all users in the U.S. just two and a half months after testing began with a select group, allows people to ask questions and receive detailed, human-like responses on nearly any topic. The rollout aligns with Google’s strategy to leverage its latest AI model, Gemini 2.5, in refining search results and enhancing user experience.

According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, ‘What all this progress means is that we are in a new phase of the AI platform shift, where decades of research are now becoming reality for people all over the world.’ Despite initial concerns that AI overviews might reduce traffic to traditional websites, recent studies indicate that users are becoming more satisfied with this form of information delivery, leading to a decrease in click-through rates from Google search results by nearly 30% over the past year.

In addition to transforming search, Google is venturing into wearable technology with a new pair of Android XR glasses. These glasses, developed in collaboration with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, will feature a hands-free camera, a voice-activated AI assistant, and will compete against existing products from Meta Platforms and Ray-Ban. Although a release date and price remain undisclosed, the preview hints at a device designed to integrate seamlessly into daily life.

The company also plans to roll out additional AI features, such as automated ticket purchasing and live video search capabilities. Google’s expanded AI initiatives are part of a broader aim to maintain its dominance in the face of rising competition from other AI-driven tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Despite legal challenges and antitrust scrutiny, Google’s search engine continues to lead with 136 billion monthly visits, far surpassing competitors.

Google’s AI advancements are not only about enhancing user experience but also about solidifying its influence in the digital ecosystem. When asked whether AI would make Google even more powerful, an AI response from the company’s new mode acknowledged the likelihood, while also noting potential impacts for web publishers.

As Google accelerates its AI adoption, other industry players and regulators are watching closely. The company’s efforts signal a new era in search technology, where AI-driven interactions could become the norm, fundamentally changing how people access and consume information.
