Google Launches Next-Gen AI ‘Gemini 2.0’
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — On December 11, 2024, Google unleashed a new wave of artificial intelligence technology with the rollout of its Gemini 2.0 software. This initiative is designed to enhance its capabilities while tackling the challenges posed by regulatory scrutiny.
The Gemini project, which was revealed last year, aims to equip AI agents with the ability to interpret images through smartphones and automate various tasks. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated, ‘Gemini 2.0 will understand more about the world around you, think multiple steps ahead and take action on your behalf, with your supervision.’
Despite being initially limited to select test groups, Google plans to widen the distribution of Gemini 2.0 next year, integrating the technology into its array of free products, including the Chrome browser and YouTube.
Aiming to maintain its competitive edge over rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft, Google remains proactive despite ongoing federal actions against its overarching dominance in the tech industry. The U.S. Justice Department is currently pushing to break up the company due to monopolistic practices.
As Gemini 2.0 is set to enhance the AI-generated overviews in search results, Pichai emphasized its significant improvements in how AI interacts with users, promoting a more human-like reasoning ability. ‘We will continue to innovate, and I can’t wait to see what this next era brings,’ Pichai affirmed.
