The Future of Wearable Technology
The race to define the future of wearable technology is heating up, with smart glasses emerging as the next major frontier. While Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration has captured attention, tech giants such as Apple, Samsung, and Google are also in pursuit of innovation. Recent developments from Google revealed the most tangible look yet at their Android XR-powered smart glasses during a live demonstration at the TED2025 conference.
Previously, Google’s smart glasses had only been seen in teaser videos and limited previews, raising questions about real-world viability. However, during the TED conference, Shahram Izadi, Google’s Android XR lead, alongside Nishtha Bhatia, demonstrated the prototype glasses in action.
Features and Functionality
The live demonstration highlighted several innovative features that distinguish these smart glasses from earlier attempts. At first glance, the device resembles ordinary eyewear, but it includes advanced technology such as a miniaturized camera, microphones, speakers, and a high-resolution color display embedded in the lenses.
These glasses are designed for comfort and discretion, with support for prescription lenses. They can connect to smartphones to access additional processing power and a wider range of applications.
Interactive Demonstration
During the showcase, Izadi used the glasses to display speaker notes, illustrating practical applications. The highlight was the integration of Google’s Gemini AI assistant. The live interactions demonstrated how Gemini could generate a haiku, recall a title of a book just glimpsed, and locate a misplaced hotel key card—all via voice commands.
The capabilities extend further, with features like on-the-fly translation—translating a sign from English to Farsi and then Hindi without manual adjustments. The presentation also included visual explanations of diagrams, object recognition, and heads-up navigation with a 3D map overlay projected in the wearer’s view.
The Broader Landscape of Smart Glasses
Google’s Android XR platform, unveiled last December, was developed with Samsung and Qualcomm to create a unified OS for extended reality devices, incorporating familiar Google applications in immersive settings. Meanwhile, Samsung is set to launch its smart glasses later this year, codenamed Haean, designed for comfort with gesture-based controls.
