Cyberport Launches Groundbreaking AI Supercomputing Centre

Cyberport’s Artificial Intelligence Supercomputing Centre (AISC), the first of its kind in Hong Kong, officially commenced operations today. Alongside the AISC, the AI Lab also opened, catering to the growing demands of the local AI ecosystem.

The opening ceremony witnessed notable figures including Prof Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, and Simon Chan, Chairman of Cyberport. At the ceremony, Prof Sun declared that “Artificial intelligence (AI) is the most critical technology for new quality productive forces in the future”. He emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the local AI ecosystem’s development.

Expected Impact on the Local Industry

With the AISC, advanced computing capabilities are set to propel industry development forward. Prof Sun elaborated, “The supercomputing centre will not only provide advanced computing capabilities but also become a cradle for converging and cultivating AI-related quality professionals.” This provides a significant boost to the region’s technological landscape.

Cyberport’s Role in AI Innovation

Simon Chan highlighted that the facility would provide 1,300 PFLOPS of computing power this year, which is expected to escalate to 3,000 PFLOPS next year. This expansion will meet the surging demand for computing power within the technology sector.

Furthermore, the AI Lab aims to harness the research and development capabilities of ecosystem partners to facilitate the transformation and realization of AI innovations across various industries.”

Government Support for AI Development

The HKSAR Government has committed significant funding to support AI development. Recently, HK$3 billion was allocated for the Artificial Intelligence Subsidy Scheme (AISS) to assist local institutions, R&D centers, and enterprises in utilizing the computing power of the AISC.

Cyberport’s Innovation Ecosystem

By housing over 330 AI and big data start-ups, including prominent ones like D2 Intelligence and Huawei, Cyberport is central to Hong Kong’s digital transformation efforts. The integration of computing resources and AI innovation positions Hong Kong as an emerging international technology hub.
