As educational leaders in Oxnard Union High School District (OUHSD) and California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI), we are committed to our students and communities. With AI becoming central in the world our students are entering, we must determine not just “if” but “how” it should be used in schools.

AI as a Transformative Tool

While some may instinctively want to limit AI in education due to concerns about academic integrity, we believe in guiding students to use AI ethically and effectively. Last year, OUHSD piloted Khanmigo, an AI-powered tutor, which was successful and expanded this year. Students have expressed a desire for tools and guidance to navigate AI in their education.

Opportunities for English Language Learners

AI offers new avenues for English Language Learners, especially newcomers to the U.S., by providing personalized support and adapting to individual needs. This can be foundational as they navigate an unfamiliar educational system.

Integrating AI in Higher Education

At CSU Channel Islands, our mission is to put students at the center of education. AI should enhance traditional learning, ensuring students graduate with skills needed in a world where AI is prevalent. Collaborations across institutions can create dynamic learning experiences.

Addressing Challenges

Educators must address access, privacy, data security, and the environmental impact of AI. Teaching students to think critically about AI’s implications is crucial. Students are ready for these conversations, asking questions like, “Is it cheating if I use AI in my assignment?”

Empowering Students

Students today manage their digital lives with competence. Our role is to provide ethical guidelines and opportunities for responsible growth. Listening to students and faculty will guide our next steps in exploring AI. By offering relevance, engagement, and a voice, we empower students to shape the world.

Thomas McCoy, Ed.D., is the Superintendent of the Oxnard Union High School District. Richard Yao, Ph.D., is the President of CSU Channel Islands.
