Microsoft CEO Emphasizes India’s AI Potential
India has the potential to be a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) but needs to balance ambition with substantial investments, according to Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. Speaking at an event, Nadella underscored the importance of adopting cutting-edge AI technologies while noting the substantial financial resources necessary for development.
Responding to a question from Abhishek Singh, the additional secretary in the ministry of electronics and IT (MeitY), regarding the focus on developing indigenous AI models versus leveraging open-source options, Nadella highlighted the high costs associated with building large language models (LLMs).
‘The real barrier to entry in large language models is the capital investment,’ he stated. ‘You may need to spend a billion dollars, 10 billion, or even 100 billion. But what if India defines its mission as achieving in a billion dollars what others have done in 10 billion? One mathematical breakthrough can shift the entire paradigm,’ he added.
Currently, Indian firms and government bodies have primarily utilized open-source models provided by leading tech corporations like Google, OpenAI, and Meta. However, there are concerns regarding the sustainability and accessibility of these platforms, prompting some experts to advocate for investment in local AI capabilities.
Nadella posited that India is at a strategic crossroads and can utilize its talent to spearhead significant innovation. ‘The design space is there for India to make a smart choice. The last major breakthrough in AI may not have happened yet. We are one breakthrough away from fundamentally altering the architecture of transformers (central architecture of LLMs). India has the talent to lead the next wave of innovation,’ he remarked.
Recently, Microsoft reaffirmed its commitment to AI in India with plans to invest $3 billion (Rs 25,700 crore) to bolster its cloud computing and AI initiatives in the region. Additionally, the company aims to train 10 million Indians in AI skills by 2030.
Moreover, Microsoft has partnered with notable organizations such as RailTel, Apollo Hospitals, Bajaj Finserv, Mahindra Group, and upGrad to leverage AI and cloud innovations. An agreement with the ministry of electronics and IT has also been established to set up AI centers of excellence and AI productivity labs across India.
Nadella concluded by highlighting AI’s transformative impact on the economy, stating, ‘AI can significantly accelerate India’s economic growth. Every year, companies can achieve a 10-15% improvement in operational efficiency, leading to a 100% transformation in five to six years. More tokens per dollar per watt will directly translate to GDP growth.’
