Taylor’s University has launched a Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering with Honours, the first in Malaysia to offer specialisations in Robotics Systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The four-year program is designed to prepare students for the fast-evolving demands of Industry 4.0 by combining mechanical engineering, electronics, robotics, and AI. Students will be equipped with the skills to develop advanced technologies in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, aerospace, and automotive.

The program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), and enables graduates to register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia — a signatory of the Washington Accord — and pursue careers as Professional Engineers with internationally recognised qualifications.

According to Professor Ts Dr Sim Yee Wai, Acting Executive Dean of the Faculty of Innovation & Technology at Taylor’s University, the global Mechatronics market is projected to reach USD 2.25 billion by 2031, and this program is designed to meet that growing demand.

“This program equips students not just to meet the demand for job-ready engineers, but to strategically shape the future of technological innovations driving Industry 4.0 globally,” Sim said.

Students will gain hands-on experience through Engineering Undergraduates for Industrial Adoption (EUFORIA) and EUFORIA Type-Research (R) programs, unique to the institution.

Starting from Year 2, the students will be able to collaborate with leading tech companies such as DJI Academy Malaysia and Unitree Robotics.

“As our first-ever academic partnership, this forward-thinking program presents an exciting opportunity. We are proud to play a role in developing engineers who will push the boundaries of robotics and automation technologies, creating global solutions that will transform industries,” said Darren Teh, General Manager of DJI Academy Malaysia.

Through collaborations with global tech leaders, students will gain direct access to cutting-edge tools and technologies used in robotics and automation.

“This program is not merely about mastering the fundamentals, it is about developing engineers who will define the future of technology,” said Program Director Ir Dr Swee King.

“By blending critical thinking, innovation and hands-on experience, we are empowering students to lead advances in robotics, automation, and AI. Our graduates would not just adapt to change, they will drive it, accelerating Malaysia’s transformation into a digital-first nation.”

Beyond the classroom, students will also collaborate in multidisciplinary projects and the Robotics Club, applying their knowledge to real-world scenarios, such as solving manufacturing challenges through simulations in the Automation Lab.

Those interested in continuing their studies can opt for a 2+2 fast-tracked Master’s degree in Mechatronics & Robotic Engineering in partnership with the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.
