Brazil’s Ambitious AI Plan

In 2024, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva unveiled the “Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan” (PBIA), a groundbreaking initiative aiming to invest $4 billion in AI programs by 2028. The initiative, under the slogan “AI for the Good of All,” is a priority for the president at the G20, positioning Brazil as a leader in AI.

Government and Public Collaboration

Luciana Santos, Brazil’s Minister of Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of collaboration between public authorities, civil society, and the private sector. She stated, “Through technology, we want to ensure benefits to our country and our people.” The plan aims to combat inequalities and enhance environmental protection.

Infrastructure and Education

The investment will upgrade the Santos Dumont supercomputer and establish a national network of AI centers. These centers will educate the public and businesses about AI technology.

Global Perspectives on AI Centers

Ranjit Tinaikar, CEO of Ness Digital Engineering, discussed the global rise of AI centers. He compared the evolution of tech hubs, highlighting the need for research institutions, venture capital, local talent, and government support. Tinaikar stated, “The government does have a role to play in making these AI centers successful.”

Ness Digital Engineering is expanding its innovation centers, with a new initiative in Central and Eastern Europe following its acquisition of Intricity.

Challenges and Sustainability

While optimistic about AI centers, Tinaikar cautioned that without research-oriented institutions, a talent hub, and supportive capital markets, sustainability remains a challenge.
