The Rise of AI in China
The latest artificial intelligence (AI) app announced in China is stirring excitement among consumers, envisioning a future where a version of Jarvis, the smart virtual assistant of Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, becomes commonplace in the world’s second-largest economy.
What is Jarvis?
The fictional Jarvis, an acronym for “Just a Rather Very Intelligent System,” is a sophisticated AI assistant that debuted in the 2008 film Iron Man. It manages and operates the internal systems of Stark’s laboratory, home, and superhero armours.
Ant Group’s New AI App
Ant Group, the fintech affiliate of Alibaba Group Holding, has ventured into Jarvis-like territory with the launch of the Zhixiaobao app. This so-called life assistant helps users order meals, hail taxis, book tickets, and discover local dining and entertainment options, while integrating with third-party services on the Alipay payment platform. AI Agents and Their Roles
The app features built-in AI agents, such as an “English-language tutor” and a “fitness pro,” each with specific domain knowledge, making them experts in their respective fields.
Practical AI Solutions
This development is part of Ant Group’s efforts to transform AI into a “practical, user-focused solution,” making Zhixiaobao a “valuable tool in everyday life,” according to company president and chief financial officer Cyril Han Xinyi.
China’s AI Industry
Zhixiaobao, a play on Zhifubao, the Chinese name for Alipay, highlights how China’s burgeoning AI industry is enhancing its reputation, with numerous innovative services already deployed overseas.
