Mangaluru: With the advent of artificial intelligence, we are exceedingly well-connected with the world; nevertheless, paradoxically, we are experiencing profound isolation, said Govindan Rangarajan, director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He was addressing the 22nd Convocation Ceremony of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka Surathkal, on Saturday.
During his address, he focused on the significant influence of artificial intelligence, emphasizing both its advantages and the social dynamics that have changed dramatically as a result. ‘We all are connected to the world with smartphones but have forfeited our capability to interact with our friends and families offline. This is a substantial ramification of technology and AI,’ he said, noting that despite being in the same room, families tend to engage more with their devices than with each other.
He further discussed how AI has influenced human perception of truth. ‘We may revert to believing solely what we personally witness. However, with the proliferation of deepfake technology, this notion is disputable now,’ Rangarajan stated. He pointed out that AI-generated messages can sometimes be perceived as more empathetic than those from human beings, indicating a shift in how relationships are facilitated.
Rangarajan advised the young graduates to cherish human relationships and maintain direct family connections beyond social media. He emphasized the need to cultivate creativity and critical thinking, stating that these competencies will distinguish humans in an AI-dominant world.
Highlighting the positive outcomes of AI, he acknowledged that the technology has garnered significant attention since the introduction of ChatGPT two years ago. ‘Some experts view this as revolutionary as the discovery of fire in human history,’ he shared. However, he cautioned not to overstate technology’s immediate effects while underestimating its long-term influence.
In conclusion, Rangarajan expressed that students should focus on advanced skill sets rather than basic coding, evolving with the changing landscape of technology. In an era where AI is rapidly reshaping traditional roles, such preparations are essential for future success.
