Lenovo and Shanghai Museum Collaborate to Bring Extinct Creatures to Life with AI Technology

Technology powerhouse Lenovo has partnered with the Shanghai Natural History Museum to launch an innovative exhibit that brings extinct animals to life through spatial computing and AI.

Launched last month, this project employs Lenovo’s proprietary spatial computing technology integrated with AI-generated content (AIGC). The exhibit features digital reconstructions of three extinct species: the Yangtze river baiji dolphin, the fin whale, and the mammoth.

Lenovo stated that these lifelike digital models were developed using high-precision scans of actual specimens, combined with AI algorithms and manual restoration techniques.

“This innovative approach not only preserved the creatures’ physical characteristics but also brought their stories to life, making the experience both educational and emotionally engaging,” Lenovo added.

The digital exhibition, titled ‘Awakening Earth’s Majestic Creatures with AI’, allows museum-goers to explore interactive representations of these creatures within themed environments.

Lenovo’s technology transports visitors to various natural habitats, including ocean depths and historic icy landscapes, where they can observe these digital animals in scenarios that reflect their natural behaviors.

One highlight of the exhibition is the fin whale experience, which enables visitors to swim virtually alongside the largest mammal on Earth, learning about its migration patterns, feeding habits, and reproductive behaviors.

Lenovo’s Innovative Approach

Lenovo’s Vice President, Mao Shijie, commented on the project, stating: “As new technologies like AI continue to evolve, the fictional worlds of sci-fi are now becoming a reality.”

Mao continued, “AI advancements are breaking down barriers to knowledge, allowing more people to directly experience and understand biodiversity.”

The collaboration reflects a broader trend in museum technology, with the University of Cambridge also launching a similar initiative, allowing guests to engage in interactions with AI representations of extinct species.

The exhibit at the Shanghai Natural History Museum marks a significant step in the intersection of technology and education, offering a unique opportunity to learn about biodiversity in a captivating way.
